Integrating sustainability into innovation with the Triple Layered Value Proposition Canvas

For companies that want to be a force for good, the ultimate value proposition delivers value for their customers, the environment, society and their business. Unfortunately, many of the innovation tools that help you develop propositions and business models were developed in an era when economics was central. One such tool, the Value Proposition Canvas, has proven to be very effective in helping people design, test and develop successful value propositions. We have adapted the Value Proposition Canvas to include the environment and society so that it can be used to work on those ultimate value propositions with value for customers, the environment, society and the business.

Framework: the Triple layered Value Proposition Canvas

Integrating social and environmental impact into innovation is a complex task. Innovation is often approached from an economic perspective and including ecological and social value is not yet standard practice. The BMC has already been adapted to include social and ecological value in addition to economic value in 'the Triple Layered Business Model Canvas' (3BMC). The 3BMC consists of 3 canvases you can use to analyse, design and improve your business model; an economic canvas, a social canvas and an ecological canvas, each with 9 building blocks. This makes the 3BMC solid, but with 27 building blocks, it is also quite complex for novice innovation teams. The Triple Layered VPC (3VPC) was designed for exactly this purpose: to provide a tool for novice innovation teams to:

  • Facilitate a holistic design process that includes society and the environment
  • Boost optimism by focusing on solving problems and creating positive benefits
  • Getting started quickly with design and testing

.Putting into practice

In our mini whitepaper, we introduce the 3VPC in more detail and elaborate on how you can use the 3VPC within your organisation. We invite you to download the whitepaper via this link and start experimenting with the 3VPC.

And as with any innovation: our process is far from finished. We look forward to hearing your experiences in applying the framework and we look forward to your examples, questions and suggestions. If you want to exchange ideas, please let us know. We would love to talk to you!
