Meaningful impact at Olympia

Challenge

Olympia, with more than 15,000 practically trained employees, such as drivers, order pickers and call centre workers, has a belief that these people deserve meaningful work. This belief is at the heart of Olympia's mission: guiding people and organisations in the social transition towards meaningful work. Olympia strives to make an impact for all its stakeholders and asked Elemental to develop a roadmap to realise this impact in a meaningful way. This question formed the basis for the development of an impact strategy.

Approach

Olympia stands out in a cost-driven market by putting meaningful work first. Where other companies often see employees as redeemable resources, Olympia values the skills and ambitions of its employees. Olympia offers development opportunities that create a sense of appreciation and dignity. This focus on meaningful work has given Olympia nine consecutive years of growth, even in a competitive environment.

Developing a robust impact strategy began with gathering insights through interviews with key stakeholders within the organisation, from board members to franchisees. Olympia drew inspiration from companies with proven impact models, such as Triodos Bank, The Sustainable Recruiter and Alfa Accountants. At the same time, a baseline measurement was carried out to assess current operations in terms of employees, environment, customers and the external environment in which Olympia operates. These insights were brought together in several workshops to jointly create a roadmap for an ambitious impact strategy, which will be further developed and implemented by a new Impact Team.

Result

The impact strategy proposal was part of a wider strategic review of Olympia. During an integration week in late 2021, facilitated by Elemental, all strategic ambitions were presented and prioritised. The broad support for the impact strategy led to the creation of an impact team. In the coming years, Olympia will fully focus on implementing the roadmap, with Elemental continuing to support the team and executives. This collaboration ensures that Olympia continues to make meaningful impact for all its stakeholders, fulfilling its mission with dedication and purpose.
