Enhancing entrepreneurship during BMC EXPRESS Province of Utrecht

The province of Utrecht wants to increase the entrepreneurship of cultural institutions from the province

Challenge

The Province of Utrecht started helping cultural institutions better understand their business model in 2013.

Utrecht is a top region in terms of living, working and recreation. To remain attractive, the province sees the importance of investing in culture, such as festivals, cultural education and libraries. Stimulating and strengthening cultural entrepreneurship also receives a lot of attention. Together with municipalities, the province wants to strengthen culture in the region through innovations and knowledge sharing.

The Province of Utrecht wants to continue supporting cultural institutions in strengthening entrepreneurship in the period 2017-2019 by organising three pathways.
Cultural institutions learn to identify business opportunities and improvement possibilities with the help of visual tools such as the Business Model Canvas (BMC).

Approach

Eight cultural institutions from the province of Utrecht get the chance to improve their business model through the BMC Express, a compact programme supported by external experts in the field of culture and business. The focus is on practical improvement by 'doing'. Together, the institutions gain more insight into key questions such as: Who is our visitor? How can we better meet the needs of current and potential visitors? How do we attract more visitors? Where are opportunities for collaborations? And how can we better organise ourselves?

This is not an individual journey. At the stations, cultural institutions pull together, sharing their learning experiences, challenges and tips. This cooperation ensures that each institution eventually continues its journey on its own, but thanks to the joint efforts, this process becomes a lot easier. During the trajectory, former participants of the BMC trajectory are also explicitly contacted. They share their experiences on business models and entrepreneurship, and act as mentors for current participants, helping them further in developing entrepreneurship.

Result

The result of the BMC Express is a strengthened entrepreneurial capacity at participating cultural institutions. They gain deeper insights into their business models, identify new opportunities and improve their ability to respond to the needs of their audiences. The joint approach not only stimulates innovation, but also builds a supportive network among the cultural institutions in the province of Utrecht, contributing to the cultural vitality of the region.
