How did we examine the state of strategy?
We live in a liminal time in which we say goodbye to the old, but do not yet know exactly what the new will be (read in this blog how we experienced this). We see the contours emerging of a time after corona, we see the foundations being laid for a more sustainable way of doing business, but nothing is 'set in stone' yet. In any case, organisations of today need to be immensely agile, able to respond immediately to crises while working hard for their long-term existence.
The onset of the corona crisis gave us air to reflect on the current state and future of strategy making. We asked ourselves 'Does this era demand a different way of strategy making? And, what types of strategy making are there really?'.
We gathered insights on how to strategise through 19 anonymous qualitative interviews with Dutch companies. From hospital to insurer, from manufacturing company to government institution, from education to leisure and from consumer products to business services. In short, a broad pallet of types of companies and sectors, but all at board level.
5 perspectives of strategy
Â
We surveyed the organisations on 5 perspectives of strategy:
- What value do organisations pursue with strategy and how do they measure success?
- Where do organisations focus their attention in strategy?
- What is the time horizon of strategy and how are short-term and long-term goals balanced?
- What approach do organisations use when implementing strategy?
- How is employee and stakeholder engagement organised?
The preliminary research, information from the interviews combined with recent developments in the media give us a tremendously rich amount of insights. This helps us in how to shape our role as consultants towards the future. How we can help organisations stay relevant. And to inspire. in the coming period, we will publish several insights, such as the blog 'How is the way of strategy making changing'.
