Embracing Broad Prosperity

Embracing broad prosperity

2024

In the past, everyone used to think that economic growth was the only way to succeed, but things have changed, and we’re challenging that idea too. Nowadays, the quest for prosperity goes beyond just making money. In our fast-paced and connected world, we believe true prosperity involves more than just economic success. At Elemental, we think it’s about considering things like people’s well-being and taking care of the environment too. We call this broader perspective “broad prosperity,” which recognizes how economic, social, and environmental factors all play a part in our overall success. This perspective is especially relevant as we celebrate B-corp month, highlighting the importance of businesses contributing positively to society and the environment while pursuing their goals.

Social well-being covers a wide range of factors, from having access to education and healthcare to affordable housing and opportunities for all. It goes beyond just material wealth, reflecting the overall quality of life for individuals and communities. Essentially, it’s about creating inclusive societies where everyone can flourish and make meaningful contributions. At Elemental, we prioritize helping organizations incorporate these principles of broad prosperity into their way of working. Here’s how we guide them in embracing broad prosperity at the core of their operations:

  • Strategic Alignment: Elemental works closely with organizations to align their objectives with broader societal goals (e.g. SDG’s, B-Corp certificate. etc). By helping companies recognize the importance of social well-being alongside economic success, we pave the way for more inclusive and sustainable business models.

  • Culture and Leadership: Fostering environments where values of social responsibility, inclusivity, and sustainability are not only embraced but also embodied from the top down. By cultivating cultures that prioritize empathy, diversity, and ethical decision-making, and by nurturing leaders who champion these values, organizations can create lasting positive impacts on society, driving towards a future where prosperity is defined not just by economic wealth, but by the well-being of all individuals and communities.

  • Capacity Building: As broad prosperity is a new way of looking at value, new expertise and guidance to build organizational capacity for promoting broad prosperity is necessary. This may involve training employees on diversity and inclusion, implementing ethical supply chain practices, or fostering a culture of corporate social responsibility. With a broad network of experts and training skills within the organization, Elemental can help to build your sustainable organization.

  • Innovation and Collaboration: Innovation and collaboration are key drivers of social progress and core values within the Elemental way of working. By fostering partnerships with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and academia, companies can leverage collective expertise and resources to tackle complex social challenges more effectively.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: In our consulting work, we facilitate meaningful engagement with stakeholders, including employees, customers, communities, and civil society organizations. By actively listening to diverse voices, companies can gain insights into the social issues that matter most and co-create solutions that address shared concerns.

In conclusion, the pursuit of broad prosperity requires a concerted effort from organisations, governments, civil society, and individuals alike. To embrace broad prosperity in your organisation, you need to have clear societal goals, embed them in your culture and leadership by building skills on diversity & inclusion and social responsibility, and create a way of working which embraces innovation and co-creation with use of different stakeholders.

Do you want to embrace the social dimension of prosperity in your organisation? Elemental is happy to help you in your journey to become a force for good in business and pursue a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable future.
